In Muzaffarpur district in Bihar, India, Rima has negotiated with her family to divide household responsibilities and has been able to return to school.

Rima is a fifteen year old girl, who supports her family with goat rearing as its their business. In Rima’s house there are 16 goats and 8 children. She takes care of the goats by taking them out for grazing everyday twice a day and also tend to their other needs. In her village she is known as “bakri charane wali ladki” (goat-grazing girl). Rima has completed her education till Year 8 and after that she had to drop out but only goes for giving exams – she falls in the not – regular category of student.

She learnt about dreams and aspirations in the Life Skills Workshop, which encouraged her to fulfil her dream of completing her education. With help of THP staff, she re enrolled in 9th standard and held conversation with her family members to support her with household responsibilities.

Her mother supported her and took the responsibility of rearing the goats in the morning and her brother supported for the same in the evening. Her sister in law now supports Rima with the household chores.

Rima previously commented, “My family is so poor that my priority is to contribute to the family income and have no time to continue school”.

Now this has changed and she says, “I know very well the importance of education and am very happy to go back to school regularly.”
