The Hunger Project’s goal is to end world hunger. Our approach is different – we see people living in hunger as the solution, not the problem. We shift the mindsets of women and men so…
Lakot Sharon's Mission to Transform Learning in Oruka
At Oruka Epicentre Nursery School, Lakot Sharon, a dedicated teacher, faced a daily challenge that extended far beyond the classroom. Young students like Alfred (featured in the banner above) would arrive hungry, their potential constrained by empty stomachs. With concentration levels low and energy depleted, the connection between nutrition and learning became painfully apparent.
“Our school learners used to arrive at school hungry, often unable to concentrate and fully engage in their learning areas,” Lakot recalls. The children’s educational journey was hampered by a fundamental need that remained unmet.
Last year, The Hunger Project Uganda introduced nutritious porridge to the school, creating a ripple effect that transformed the entire learning environment. The impact was immediate and profound.
“Since the introduction of the nutritious porridge, our classroom dynamics have shifted dramatically. The children now come to school with smiles, eager and ready to learn,” shared Lakot with evident joy. “They are more attentive and participative, with their energy levels significantly improved.”
Beyond academic performance, the regular meals have nurtured the children’s social and emotional development. A new sense of security and stability has emerged, allowing students to focus on educational activities rather than hunger. Classroom interactions have become more positive and collaborative, creating a vibrant community of young learners.
The impact extends beyond the school walls. Parents report children returning home energetic and excited to share their new knowledge. This has strengthened the bond between the school and community, with families becoming more engaged in their children’s education.
For Lakot, the nutritious porridge program represents more than just food: it’s a foundation for future possibilities. By addressing this basic need, The Hunger Project has ignited a passion for learning that continues to flourish throughout the Oruka community.
