The Hunger Project’s goal is to end world hunger. Our approach is different – we see people living in hunger as the solution, not the problem. We shift the mindsets of women and men so…
Mwaiwawo takes action to lead in her community.
At just 25 years old, Mwaiwawo from Mtengereni Village in Majete 7 is already rewriting the future for herself and her family. Married with two children, Mwaiwawo spent years as a housewife, relying entirely on her husband to provide for their household. But with only one income, meeting even the most basic needs was a constant struggle.
The pressure weighed heavily on the family, and Mwaiwawo knew something needed to change. “With this situation in our household, I knew I had to do something to end the suffering, but I had no idea of what that could be,” she shared.
Everything shifted early this year when Vision Commitment Action (VCA) Animators from Majete 7 organised a community workshop to train partners in VCA. These workshops are the foundation of The Hunger Project’s Epicentre Strategy, and are key in shifting mindsets, building confidence, and motivating people to take action to improve their lives.
Seeing an opportunity, Mwaiwawo decided to attend. “This workshop transformed my mindset,” said Mwaiwawo. Through the visioning process emphasised during the workshop, she gained clarity and confidence. She developed a strong vision for generating income and ending poverty in her home.
“I decided to venture into a small-scale business to fulfil this vision”, Mwaiwawo further said. With her new sense of purpose, she approached her husband for support, and he provided her with the money she needed to begin. Mwaiwawo launched a business selling fried potatoes and within just five months, she was already making a profit.
The impact was immediate and life-changing. The additional income brought relief and joy to the entire household, easing burdens that once felt overwhelming. Her husband proudly shared, “My wife has been able to purchase groceries for the household, a thing that was impossible in the past”.
With this success, Mwaiwawo has not only transformed her own life but has also become an inspiration to others. She now encourages fellow women to attend community-based VCA workshops, believing strongly in their power to create change. What began as uncertainty and struggle has become a story of vision, empowerment, and meaningful progress – showing the profound impact of the Vision, Commitment & Action approach in Majete 7.
