Hunger is a experiencing a polycrisis moment, where already fragile food systems are being rocked by conflict, soaring inflation, cost of living pressures and climate change.

The latest data from the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) on the State of Food Security and Nutrition are alarming.

Up to 757 million people do not have enough to eat or feed their families.

This is unacceptable.

It’s now more important than ever for our community to galvanise.  Collectively, we can make an incredible impact for the real people behind the numbers. Women like Julia, Arti, Manou and Pushpa who share how our programs have transformed their lives, and those of their children.

It’s the stories of resilient, amazing women like them who are living proof that The Hunger Project works, and is changing the systems that cause hunger and poverty to persist.

We have expertise, knowledge, trust and credibility in our favour. We have deeply embedded relationships with communities.

We have proven solutions that require smart investment to scale and impact millions more.

With you as our partner, we believe we can create a world without hunger.

Key Facts

What is the Global Hunger Emergency?

Global hunger numbers are unacceptably high, with up to 757 million people living in hunger. South Asia, Africa, The Middle East and Latin America are bearing the brunt of global hunger.

What has caused the GHE?

Ongoing world conflict is causing huge suffering and displacement. When resources of any kind are scarce — such as food, shelter and medicine — tensions and unrest also increase. This then leads to inflation and economic instability across global markets, which impacts the cost of transporting food and food inputs such as fertiliser to grow food. Then layer the climate crisis on top of these already huge challenges and you can easily see how this polycrisis situation is critical.

Who is affected by the GHE?

The majority are women and girls.

Often women and girls will forgo meals when food is scarce, with available protein portioned to men and boys. Women are key providers of food, yet are often excluded from its production, management and profits.

Where is the GHE happening?

Africa, South Asia, The Middle East and Latin America are the places that are currently experiencing extremely high levels of hunger and poverty.

What can I do to take action?

It can feel overwhelming but know that you are not alone. The Hunger Project is currently reaching more than 12 million people around the world, through a global network of 22 countries, to create a world without hunger.

Mozambique 2023 Julia Joaquim in vegetable garden The Hunger Project (8) (1) (1)

When The Hunger Project arrived, I thought we would get (material) things. But now I understand how it works.
I actively participate in many activities, growing veggies in our vegetable gardens, a village savings group and the literacy program. I am especially proud that I am now able to write my name.
At first, I was not sure if I should start studying again, but I was convinced by The Hunger Project to go to the adult literacy classes; to go back to school. And I did.

Pushpa THP India (1) (1)

I did not know better. I had children one after another.
I wish I had a greater understanding so I could have planned, decided, and paced myself.
Now I am more aware and don’t want the same for my daughters.
They want to pursue higher education, and I will support them as much as possible.

We are educated. And we don't forget that knowledge anymore. That stays with us - and we can continue to use it.
We are also ready to tackle things ourselves.
The Hunger Project has prepared us for that.
We have the knowledge, and it stays.

It is more than just about receiving information.
It is comforting to see other women facing similar struggles in their families, coming together and learning together.
Now we grow enough for a family of four. It is fresh food.
And sometimes also share our produce with our neighbour in distress.
