Australian hikers atop Mount Kosciuszko after an eight day pilgrimmage from Canberra (2011)

'I ought to do something about this'. These moments invariably pass by, and we have done nothing.
But there will be one moment, one day, when you become aware of an issue that commands your immediate action. You get up and do something about it. And soon enough, you are swept up in the momentum of your action in the accompaniment of others who share the same passion, the same commitment. And you don't look over your shoulder once, such is your experience on this new journey of discovery."
What is hike4hunger?
hike4hunger is a campaign that aims to raise funds through a series of international pilgrimages and hikes of solidarity with world hunger. We aim to inspire a global movement in commemoration of UN World Food Day each year on October 16, and draw attention to and lead action on the global hunger crisis.
hike logo"Each hike4hunger takes place in an area of iconic significance, ideally reaching high ground on or before World Food Day. hike4hunger helps to initiate and organise these symbolic walks, from short day hikes to pilgrimages lasting several days, and encourages participants to raise funds to support the work done by The Hunger Project to end world hunger. In the past, hikes have occurred in Australia, Colombia, Gabon, Germany, Ireland, Kenya, Lebanon, Malawi, New Zealand, Nigeria, Macedonia, South Africa, UK, USA, and Zimbabwe. Our pilgrimages and hikes differ in each country, but the overall message is the same – change starts with us recognizing that there is a problem.
By participating in a hike4hunger, you can become part of a global initiative to raise the profile of world hunger and draw the deserved attention to World Food Day each October.
Our goals are:
- 1. To raise awareness of the global hunger crisis
- 2. To encourage participation in global hikes of solidarity
- 3. To raise funds towards programs that help to build sustainable communities and end world hunger
Our initiative is not just about raising money. While we encourage our hikers to fundraise, we really challenge you to think differently about the world around you and take a stand by recognising that hunger needs to be addressed by the global community.
We are currently recruiting
hike leaders for 2013!
hike4hunger is looking for new volunteers who would like to get involved and help us spread awareness about the current hunger crisis. This year we are organising two day hikes, one in Sydney and one in Melbourne you can participate in, with details to be confirmed in the coming months. Or, you can lead or participate in a pilgrimage (3 or more days) or your own shorter hike (1-3 days). Planning a hike is easy, and you can structure it however you like! There are no restrictions on length, location or size. All you have to do is pick a place of significance in your area, get some people involved and tell us about it. You can grab a few friends and family members to take a meaningful hike with you in solidarity of the hungry. Or you can think big and get your neighbours, communities and nearby schools involved to help raise awareness. Get your friends and family, work, and other businesses to sponsor you and help us reach our goal of $100,000. Remember to send us a photo of your achievement!
Planning your own hike
If you are interested in planning your own hike, please 'Create an Event' under the Get Involved section of our website. You will be able to describe your hike, noting details of location and time, and set a fundraising goal for your group. Your donors can then give towards your hike directly through your event page. We urge you to aim high when setting your fundraising goal, and to be creative in ways to raise those funds! In order for us to reach our goal of $100,000, we hope you will consider committing to raise at least $1000 per hike or more. If you run into any problems while creating your event or have any questions about leading a hike, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org
Join a Hike or Pilgrimage
If you would like to join an existing hike, please see our 'Attend an Event' page to view a list of hikes that are planned. We also have three fantastic pilgrimages this year. We are holding an 8-day pilgrimage from Canberra to Mt Kosciuszko, and an 8-day pilgrimage from Cape Naturalist to Cape Leeuwin in Western Australia, both of which are in October. There is also a 10-day pilgrimage along the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea, also in October. For details please email email@example.com
If you are looking for a way to get your employees involved in a great cause, consider having a work-sponsored hike as a team building exercise. You can form a hiking group with your colleagues at work and raise money together.
Corporate teams must commit to raising at least $2,000. The team that raises the most money by World Food Day will receive a prize in recognition of your achievement. Please contact us for further information or to set up a meeting to discuss participating in hike4hunger 2013.
